Rangre

(Scroll down for translation)

Rangrez, zara haule rang uda
Chheenton se ghabraaoon main
Satrangi tere laare jo,
Kaise ab bach paaoon main

Simat chaloon main nain jhukaaye
Chhoote kaheen rang na lag jaaye
Ud ud tere hanste rang
Kahein mujhse, ho le sang

Khilte rang hain humein lalchaaye
Nazar lagi lo yeh man bhaaye
Par na sun man ye maana maani
Kori chaadar hain toone taani

Kori chhadar le chali too kahaan
Is chaadar ka kahaan hai thaan
Sambhal chal gori kya paayegi
Man mail to kaheen se bhi aa jaayeegi

Rang le tu chal more sang
Bhar bhar daalon main tujhpe rang
Tu aur tera ik ho jaanve
Is khel mein sab kho ke paanve

Bin bheege koi tar paaya nahin
Rookha reh jaaye jaaya nahin
Is der phir too aayi kyon
Jo rangon se itna katraaayeen yon?

Kori chunariya maili ho jaave
Rangon mein ghul mail na aave
Dhul dhul rang pheeka kyon hove
Jab raah chalein sang rang pirove.

Aar ya paar bole man haar
Ab doob doob tu mohe rang daar
Tere rang mein kho jaaoon main
Pi ke man ki ho jaaoon main

Rangon ki barkha bhar le too
Chhanan Channan mujh pe gir le tu
Jaise badariya ban gagariya ka saar
Tu bhi bhar de mere man ko man paar

Tere rang mein rang chali
Ab kya dekhoon apni voh gali
Jo chunar ke thi peechhe padi
Voh kya jaane rangon ki ladi

Khilti hoon ab rangon ko taan
Rangrez, dekh ab uthi tere rangon ki shaan
Chal piya, baabul dar more
Voh bhi dekhein yeh rang mohe sohe.

And the translation, line by line:

Rangrez, zara haule rang uda
Chheenton se ghabraaoon main
Satrangi tere laare jo,
Kaise ab bach paaoon main

Colourman, throw your colours with care
I’m afraid some will splash on me
Your rainbow hued lures
How shall I save myself from them?
(Rangrez=colourman, one who dyes, also sufi meaning where colours represent many things. In this poem, bhakti/love)

Simat chaloon main nain jhukaaye
Chhoote kaheen rang na lag jaaye
Ud ud tere hanste rang
Kahein mujhse, ho le sang

I walk limiting myself, with my eyes lowered
Lest the flying colours attach themselves to me
Your laughing colours fly so
They tell me – come along!

Khilte rang hain humein lalchaaye
Nazar lagi lo yeh man bhaaye
Par na sun man ye maana maani
Kori chaadar hain toone taani

These blooming colours tempt me so
I see them and I really like them
But heart, don’t listen to your wilfulness
I have an uncoloured/bare covering for myself

Kori chhadar le chali too kahaan
Is chaadar ka kahaan hai thaan
Sambhal chal gori kya paayegi
Man mail to kaheen se bhi aa jaayeegi

Where are you going with this bare-uncoloured covering
What is the purpose/destination of this bare cloth?
What will you gain by being so careful
The (world’s) evils/dirt will come and stain it anyhow

Rang le tu chal more sang
Bhar bhar daalon main tujhpe rang
Tu aur tera ik ho jaanve
Is khel mein sab kho ke paanve

Get coloured you, come with me
I’ll fill and pour colour (love/happiness) over you
You and yours will become one
In this game, we gain (God/eternal truth) only by losing (ourselves)

Bin bheege koi tar paaya nahin
Rookha reh jaaye jaaya nahin
Is dar phir too aayi kyon
Jo rangon se itna katraaayeen yon?

Without getting wet, no one has been able to swim across
The one who stays dry has not been born
Why did you come this way/to this door then,
If you were so fussy/fearful (of) about colours

Kori chunariya maili ho jaave
Rangon mein ghul mail na aave
Dhul dhul rang pheeka kyon hove
Jab raah chalein sang rang pirove.

The bare coloured cloth will (certainly) get dirty
But merged with bright colours the dirt is insignificant
Even when you wash it, why would the colours fade
IF we go (through life)/travel the road collecting colours
(dirt= ego, anger, vice etc. colour= love, devotion, virtue)

Aar ya paar bole man haar
Ab doob doob tu mohe rang daar
Tere rang mein kho jaaoon main
Pi ke man ki ho jaaoon main

Either this end or that, my heart gives in
Now drown me in colour my dear
Let me get lost in your colour
Let me be of the mind of my lover (of the same mind, what the lover desires)

Rangon ki barkha bhar le too
Chhanan Channan mujh pe gir le tu
Jaise badariya ban gagariya ka saar
Tu bhi bhar de mere man ko man paar

Fill up your rain of colour
Fall on me as the pitter patter of rain
Like the cloud emulates the pot of water
Fill my heart so that it goes beyond itself

Tere rang mein rang chali
Ab kya dekhoon apni voh gali
Jo chunar ke thi peechhe padi
Voh kya jaane rangon ki ladi

I have been coloured in your colour
Now why should I see my old lane
That obsessed about my covering cloth
What do they know about the attachment of colour/colours strung together

Khilti hoon ab rangon ko taan
Rangrez, dekh ab uthi tere rangon ki shaan
Chal piya, baabul dar more
Voh bhi dekhein yeh rang mohe sohe.

I bloom now, wearing these colours
Colourman, see, now your colours achieve glory
Come, my lover, come let us visit my father’s door
Let him also see how these colours suit me so well.
