Manjul Lutera

Ek jhadi barsi aur tumne itne rang barsaaye
Ki hum khud ko rok na paaye

Dekho yahaan patjhad sajaaya
Berukhe rangon ne rukh mod dikhaaya

Idhar zard pattiyaan bikhri ghani
Jaise hamaare liye hi taant ho buni

Chaar kadam pe surkh laal bichhona tha
Kaisa kamaal yeh rangon ka pirona tha

Saji thi sej har ped tale
Raaste aise pattiyon se bhare
Jaise bicchi palkein banaati raah
Jaise dekh rahi hon doobi chaah

Saundhi si khushboo hawaon mein barpa
Maati ujali, phisalna sa rasta
Chamakte chasme mein halki parchhayi
Jhapki si, na aayi na jaayi

Bikhra voh baag yoon hamein bulaata
Haule sur mein door koi gun ho gaata
Yeh jaadu hai pal ka, yeh chamakta savera
Salona jo uljha voh manjul lutera

While much is lost in translation, many gain 🙂

Ek jhadi barsi aur tumne itne rang barsaaye
Ki hum khud ko rok na paaye

Just one shower and you sprayed so many colours
That I could not stop myself

Dekho yahaan patjhad sajaaya
Berukhe rangon ne rukh mod dikhaaya

Look, here is leaf-fall set up
Dried up/Bored/uninteresting leaves have turned it interesting
(berukhe = detatched, uninterested; rukh = direction; mod = turning)

Idhar zard pattiyaan bikhri ghani
Jaise hamaare liye hi taant ho buni

Here yellow leaves/petals are spread thick
As if some one has woven it just for us
(taant = weave, string)

Chaar kadam pe surkh laal bichhona tha
Kaisa kamaal yeh rangon ka pirona tha

Four steps away a bedspead of red
How wonderful is this stringing together of colours

Saji thi sej har ped tale
Raaste aise pattiyon se bhare
Jaise bicchi palkein banaati raah
Jaise dekh rahi hon doobi chaah

Under each tree was a beautiful bed done up
The paths were strewn with petals
Like eyes that wait create a path
As if they could see the submerged wish

Saundhi si khushboo hawaon mein barpa
Maati ujali, phisalna sa rasta
Chamakte chasme mein halki parchhayi
Jhapki si, na aayi na jaayi

A warm musky scent floats in the air
The mud, it shines, the path slippery
The shiny (mirrored/eye) puddle sees a light shadow pass
Like a flicker of a nap, that neither comes nor goes
(aayi=comes, jaayi = goes, is born.. so this cd read that neither comes nor is born)

Bikhra voh baag yoon hamein bulaata
Haule sur mein door koi gun ho gaata
Yeh jaadu hai pal ka, yeh chamakta savera
Salona jo uljha voh manjul lutera

This unkempt garden calls us so
Like the strain of a soft siren far away
This is the magic of the moment – this morning that shines
Beauty in tangle, this lovely thief/bandit.

  1. Im sorry my Hindi isn’t too good…. but i felt like writing something after reading yours 🙂

Iss barsaat ke rang bohat niraalay hain,
Kayi sundar phool jese oz ke piyalay hain,
Mat satana ke barkha jawaa’n hai abhi,
Dekho kitna sundar samaa’n hai abhi,

Yeh Jaadu nahi hai kuch sapne hain mere,
Kuch panchhi paraaye kuch apne hain mere,
Agar aisa hota ke woh lot atay,
Tau khushiyon ke ham bhi kayi geet gatay,

Magar ye chamakna tau dhoka hi nikla,
Woh barish ka paani tau sookha hi nikla,
Jo krta tha rangon, bahaaron ki batien,
Hai pat-jhad jo aya raheen sirf yaadien…
